Nov. 26, 2001

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's volleyball team has been selected as one of 64 teams to compete in the 2001 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship.

The Aztecs, who finished the 2001 season with a 16-12 mark, will meet up with top-ranked and top-seeded Long Beach State (28-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Pyramid on the Long Beach State campus.

"We feel very fortunate to have been selected," said seventh-year SDSU head coach Mark Warner. "We're going to make the best of the experience."

Warner's 1995 and '96 SDSU teams also appeared in the NCAA Tournament and Friday's match will be the 13th time overall the Aztec program has appeared in the national bracket. SDSU made back-to-back Final Four appearances in the first two NCAA Championships (1981 and '82).

SDSU is one of four Mountain West Conference schools to earn a spot in the 2001 tournament with Brigham Young, Colorado State and Utah also receiving the honor.

Tickets for Friday's match go on sale Tuesday at 10 a.m. and can be purchased at the Long Beach State box office (562 985-4949) or via the internet at www.longbeachstate.com.

San Diego State's Cox Arena at Aztec Bowl will be the site of the 2001 NCAA Women's Volleyball National Championship Dec. 13th and 15th.
