Aztecs Roll Past Northern Iowa In Season Opener

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Tony Bland had 24 points and eight assists, leading San Diego State to a 71-57 victory over Northern Iowa on Friday night.

The Aztecs advance to a Saturday night game against Bob Knight and Texas Tech, the hosts of the Red Raiders Classic. Tech beat William & Mary 75-55 in the early game. The losers also will play Saturday night.

Northern Iowa led 28-27 at halftime, yet couldn't keep it up. SDSU was in control for much of the second half.

Randy Holcomb scored 16 and Mike Mackell had 15 for SDSU. Deandre Moore, who tied Aerick Sanders for the team lead in rebounds with six, scored all nine of his points on 3-pointers.

Robbie Sieverding led Northern Iowa with 17 points, most coming on his 10-of-10 foul shooting. Aaron Middendorf scored 14 and David Gruber had 10 points and 13 rebounds.
