FRESNO, Calif. - The San Diego State men's soccer team was eliminated from the Mountain Sports Federation Championship Thursday after tying UNLV 3-3 at Bulldog Stadium on the Fresno State campus. UNLV advanced by edging the Aztecs in a shootout, 4-1. The fourth-seeded Aztecs and fifth-seeded Rebels were tied at three goals apiece following regulation and two double-overtime periods were unable to provide a winner setting up the shootout.
UNLV connected on its first three attempts in the shootout frame. SDSU junior Tyler Tinling found the net on the Aztecs' third attempt and UNLV would score on its next try making it mathematically impossible for the Aztecs to tie.
Both teams were credited with a tie moving SDSU to 7-8-4 overall and UNLV 8-7-2. UNLV goes on to meet eighth-seed New Mexico in the first of two semifinal matches on Friday.
The Aztecs controled the first half of play owning a 3-0 lead at the intermission. Sapanli scored the team's first two goals, one at 24:56 off an assist from freshman Eric Wohl and the next on a penalty kick at 38:56. Junior Adam Kulpa would score an unassisted goal with less than a minute left in the first period.
The Aztecs were in control of the shutout until the 61:46 mark when UNLV's Alex Hernandez found the net. The Rebels quickly scored another at 63:06 and knotted the contest at 86:51.
SDSU goalkeeper Tim Edwards spent all 120:00 minutes and the shootout period in net. The tie moves him to 4-4-4 on the year.
San Diego soccer fans will get one last chance to see the Aztecs play this season, when the team faces USD on Sun., Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck. USD is currently ranked 16th in the Soccer Times poll.
