Aztecs' Maiberger and Redondo Claim Grand Slam Title

Nov. 10, 2001

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State's Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo claimed the first grand slam title in school history with an 8-6 doubles victory over John Brunstrom and Eric Cohn of tournament-host SMU in the championship match of the 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas.

Maiberger, a junior from Lorsch, Germany, and Redondo, a sophomore from San Diego, Calif., won four matches in three days to claim the grand slam event. They outscored their opponents 32-20 during the three-day run.

"We're really comfortable with each other," Redondo said. "We compliment each other real well. He trust me and I trust him."

Key points in the match came in the seventh game when Maiberger and Redondo broke Cohn's serve to take a 4-3 lead. They survived a scare with Redondo serving at 6-5, fighting off three break points to go up 7-5. Maiberger served out the final game with an ace on match point.

The victory by the Aztec duo denied the Mustangs' Brunstrom a second consecutive national indoor championship.

Maiberger and Redondo's run toward the title began on Thursday, when the pair posted two victories. The Aztec duo disposed of Cody Conley and Joachim Lien of Louisville, 8-4, in the opening round. Then Maiberger and Redondo pulled an upset, defeating the third-seeded team of Andrew Colombo and Tiago Ruffoni of Auburn, 8-5, in the quarterfinal round.

Yesterday, they defeated Marcus Hornung and Reiner Neurohr of Baylor, 8-5, in the semifinal round.

The Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship, the second-leg of the college grand slam, included 32-player singles field and a 16-team doubles draw for men and women.
