Brandon Smith Knee Surgery Deemed A Success

Nov. 6, 2001

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior basketball player Brandon Smith underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a tear of the meniscus cartilage in his right knee on Tuesday morning. The 35-minute procedure is expected to keep the Amarillo, Texas, native out two to three weeks.

"The surgery went real, real well," San Diego State basketball trainer Mark Haines said. "They found about what they expected and excised the tissue. We will know more about the recovery rate in five-to-seven days."

Smith, a transfer from Michigan, started and scored 12 points and added two assists in 19 minutes of action in the Aztecs' exhibition opener against EA Sports West All-Stars. The 6-7, 215-pound Smith left the game with discomfort in his right knee early in the second half.

San Diego State will play its second and final exhibition game of the season on Wednesday night against the L.A. Stars. Game time is set for 8 p.m. It will be the second game of a doubleheader with the Aztec women who host to an AAU team called Team Concept at 6 p.m.
