SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The San Diego State men's soccer team closed out the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation portion of its season Saturday losing 3-1 to CSU Sacramento in from of 869 fans at Hornet Soccer Field. The loss drops the Aztecs to 7-8-3 overall and 3-2-2 in the MPSF, good for a No. 4 seed in next week's league tournament.
SDSU's lone goal came courtesy of freshman Eric Wohl, whose fourth goal of the season came at 71:08 as he headed a cross from sophomore Kevin Sapanli. Wohl slid for the header shot colliding with CSUS goalkeeper Chris Haustein. Sapanli's assist was his third of the year.
CSU Sacramento (5-8-4, 4-1-2 MPSF), which finished the year with the conference's No. 1 seed scored first at 33:34 and struck again at 61:54 before SDSU's Wohl would spoil the shutout. The Hornets chipped in an insurance goal at 80:15.
Play between the teams was fairly even, with CSUS taking 17 shots compared to 15 by SDSU. The Hornets also took one more corner kick.
The Aztecs will face No. 5 seed UNLV (8-7-1, 3-1-1 MPSF) Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the first round of the MPSF tournament to be hosted by Fresno State. The winner of the Aztecs and Rebels match will face the winner of the CSU Sacramento and No. 8 seed New Mexico match in the semifinal round. Semifinal matches begin at 5 p.m. on Friday with the championship match being held at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The tournament champion receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Air Force (11-4-1, 4-2-1 MPSF) finished in the league's second place spot with 13 points and will face Fresno State on Thursday. Denver finished third with 12 points, followed by SDSU (11), UNLV (10), San Jose State (9), Fresno State (8) and New Mexico (1).
