FRESNO, Calif. - Mark Warman and Chris Galeski each shot 1-over par 73 during Saturday's final round, but it wasn't enough to keep the San Diego State men's golf team in contention as the Aztecs closed out the 39th annual Fresno Lexus Golf Classic in fifth place with a team score of 12-over 876.
Still, it was the third top-5 team finish in three tournaments for the Aztecs, who were playing without 2001 Mountain West Conference player of the year Lars Johansson. Johansson missed the event due to an academic conflict but will join the team for Monday's opening round of The Club Glove Intercollegiate in Somis, Calif.
Host school Fresno State was the only team to complete the two-day tournament below par, carding a combined 30-under par total of 834. The Bulldogs also had thee players finish in the top-5, including individual medallist Nick Watney who finished up 13 strokes under par.
Warman was the Aztecs' top finisher, moving up three slots Saturday to finish tied for 13th at 2-over par 218. John Lieber, who carded a three-round total of 5-over 221 and closed out the tournament tied for 23rd, was the only other SDSU golfer to place in the top 25.
The San Diego State men's golf team faces a fast turnaround as the Aztecs head back to the coast for The Club Glove Intercollegiate hosted by Pepperdine in Somis, Calif. SDSU will participate in a practice round Sunday before action gets underway with the opening two rounds of play on Monday.
