KAPOLEI, Hawaii - The Kapolei golf course played tough during the opening day of the Rainbow Wahine Fall Golf Classic Tuesday, as just one team finished the opening two rounds below 600. Paced by Asa Jankler and Frieda Englund, the San Diego State women's golf team closed out the opening day's action tied for 10th at 50-over 626. The Aztecs shot 317 during the morning session and 309 in the afternoon.
No team was able to complete the opening 36 holes below par, including tournament leader New Mexico, which heads into Wednesday's third and final round at 20-over 596. Arizona (604) is eight strokes off the pace in second with Baylor (608) 12 shots back in third.
Individually, UNM's Claudia Ferrini carded Tuesday's low two-round total, finishing atop the opening-day leader board at 1-over 145. Jankler and Englund, SDSU's top finishers, shot 11-over 155 and are tied for 30th, with Englund's second-round 74 ranking as the Aztecs' best score of the first two rounds.
Shayna Miyajima, who entered the tournament with San Diego State's lowest stroke average on the season, finished up tied for 47th at with a 36-hole score of 159. Sandy Kim shot 160 and is tied for 54th, while Heather Rollo carded a 164 and is tied for 70th.
Play at the Rainbow Wahine Fall Golf Classic concludes with Wednesday's third and final round beginning at 7:30 a.m. (HST).
