SAN DIEGO - A goal by freshman Eric Wohl with 3 minutes and 48 seconds remaining in the second-overtime period Sunday lifted the San Diego State men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over New Mexico at the SDSU Sports Deck.
The win moves the Aztecs to 7-6-3 overall and 3-1-2 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. The victory also pushes the team over the .500 mark for the first time this season.
Wohl's game winner was scored at the 116:12 mark from eight yards out on the right side of the box and came off a header from junior Adam Kulpa who picked up his second assist of the year.
New Mexico (3-10-2, 0-5-1 MPSF) opened the day's scoring early when junior Stian Erickson found the net with a shot from 30 yards out at 7:49.
SDSU's Ryan Cook knotted the score at a goal apiece at the 73:43 mark when he headed a cross from senior Enrique Tovar. The goal was Cook's first of the year. Tovar's assist was his team-leading seventh of the season.
Aztec senior goalkeeper Tim Edwards spent the entire match in net, recording three saves. Edwards is now 4-1-3 on the year with a 0.98 goals-against average.
With 11 points SDSU sits in a tie with CSU Sacramento (4-6-4, 3-1-2 MPSF) for second place in the conference standings and is only one point behind first-place Air Force (11-3, 4-1 MPSF) which lost to Denver (9-4-3, 3-2 MPSF) 1-0 on Sunday. CSU Sacramento defeated UNLV 4-1 on Sunday to keep pace with the Aztecs.
SDSU takes a one-match break from league play this week, competing at CSU Fullerton on Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. On Sunday Nov. 4, the Aztecs close conference play at CSU Sacramento at 3 p.m.
