SAN DIEGO - Two second-half goals and 115 minutes of play were not enough Friday as the San Diego State men's soccer team tied UNLV 2-2 at the SDSU Sports Deck. The match between the Aztecs and Rebels was halted due to darkness with five minutes remaining in the second overtime period leaving the contest a draw.
UNLV (7-6-1, 2-2-1 MPSF) started the day's scoring at 27:02 when Jason Melendez finished a cross from Kevin Lunkwitz.
The score would stay 1-0 in favor of the Rebels until SDSU's Enrique Tovar found the net at 48:03. The goal was Tovar's team-leading sixth of the year and came on a double assist from Eric Wohl and Kevin Sapanli.
UNLV would regain the lead at 64:04 with Melendez again connecting on frame. His goal came on a penalty kick. Melendez took the penalty shot, SDSU goalkeeper Tim Edwards deflected the shot and Melendez finished the rebound.
SDSU (6-6-3, 2-2-1 MPSF) again knotted the score at 70:17 with an unassisted score by Tyler Tinling, his fifth of the season.
Aztec keeper Tim Edwards spent all 115 minutes in net recording seven saves. Rebel keeper Justin Dennis also went the distance and earned six saves.
SDSU returns to action Sunday when they face league foe New Mexico in a 2 p.m. match at the SDSU Sports Deck.
