SAN DIEGO - Junior Lindsey Hedberg knocked-off ninth-seeded Lauren Fisher of UCLA, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 2001 Omni Hotels Western Regional Women's Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center.
In defeating 76th-ranked Fisher, Hedberg advanced to a showdown against second-seed and 15th-ranked Jewel Peterson of USC.
The Aztecs, the tournament host, had six singles players in the 64-player field and posted an impressive 4-2 record in first round matches. However, only Hedberg was able to claim a second-round victory.
Katja Karrento, Katalina Romero and seeded-player Silvia Tornier all claimed first-round victories before losing in Friday's second round.
In addition to the first two singles rounds, the first round of the 32-team doubles competition got underway on Friday. Katey Becker and Chidley advanced to Saturday's second round with an 8-4 victory over Kelly Chan and Cheryl Kindred of Long Beach State, 8-4.
The tournament, which began with qualifying rounds on Thursday, features 16 teams in the western region. Play continues through Monday at the Barnes Center and is free to the public.
