This Week
The San Diego State swimming and diving team get its 2001-02 season underway this weekend, traveling to Stockton, Calif., to compete in the University of the Pacific Invitational. The all day event will be held Friday-Saturday at Chris Kjedsen Pool.
The Format
This weekend's event will consist of a seven-team field. Along with SDSU, CSU Hayward, CSU Bakersfield, San Francisco State, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz and Nevada are schedule to compete. The event will be run in a timed finals format.
Last Year At The UOP Invitational
The Aztecs got last season underway at the UOP Invite as well. SDSU was paced by Megan Storey who finished third in the 500 freestyle and second in the 1,650 free. SDSU also had a strong showing from Heather DeFelice who finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke and third in the 200 breast.
Aztec Coaching Staff
SDSU head coach Deena Deardurff Schmidt enters her eighth season at the helm of the Aztec swimming and diving program. Schmidt is assisted by Greg Hutt, also in his eighth season.
2000-01 Season Review
The SDSU swim team finished its 2001 campaign with a 3-7 dual meet record and a sixth-place finish (357.5 points) at the Mountain West Conference championships in Oklahoma City in February. Brigham Young finished first with 815 points. The Aztecs finished behind Wyoming (420) and a spot ahead of Air Force (341). SDSU set five school records at the league championships with three of those coming in relay events. The Aztecs' school best marks came in the 800 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay and 200 free relay. Freshman Megan Storey set a record mark in the 1,650 free and junior Meghan Casillian in the 100 back. Ten Aztecs scored points as a member of a relay or on an individual basis at the championship meet. The Aztecs also set three other school records during the regular season with Storey now owning the program's best time in the 1,000 free, junior Tara Johnson the 100 butterfly and junior Heather DeFelice the 100 breaststroke. The season also saw the team register 11 more top-three finishes for the program's record book. SDSU placed first in 35 events during the season with 28 of those coming by way of five athletes - juniors Meghan Casillan and Heather DeFelice, sophomore Erin Kilpatrick and freshmen Megan Storey and Hannah Ryan. Storey led the group with 12 wins. DeFelice had seven, Casillan, Kilpatrick and Ryan three each.
Here's The Storey
The story of the 2000-01 campaign was freshman Megan Storey. The Edmonds, Wash. native was the only Aztec to earn an NCAA consideration mark last season, doing so with her second-place (16:49.91) finish in the 1,650 free at the Speedo Cup. That mark established the new school record, a mark she broke later at the conference meet. She was also the only SDSU swimmer to earned the league's swimmer of the week honor, doing so in February. Throughout the season she posted 12 first-place finishes and placed in the top three 19 times. During the summer of 2000 she climbed into the swimming world's record book, placing among the top 50 in the world in the mile freestyle with a time of 17:08.05.
