SAN DIEGO - San Diego State sophomore Oliver Maiberger's run at the ITA All-American Championship in Stone Mountain, Ga., came to a dramatic end in the quarterfinal round on Saturday as the Aztec sophomore lost to fifth-ranked K.J. Hippensteel of Stanford, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Maiberger, ranked 13th nationally and seeded eighth in the grand slam event, won his three previous matches in straight sets and took the opening set from Hippensteel. But the Cardinal player rallied to take the next two sets and advance to the semifinal round later today.
Both players had dominated their opponents in the first three rounds. Neither played had dropped a set entering Saturday's action, with Maiberger losing just 14 games and Hippensteel dropping 16 games in six sets.
