SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's soccer team got its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation schedule underway and won its fourth match in five tries Friday, defeating 25th-ranked Denver (6-3-3, 0-1 MPSF) 2-0 at the SDSU Sports Deck.

The win marks the first time the program has beaten a ranked opponent under head coach Lev Kirshner and moves the Aztecs to .500 (5-5-1, 1-0 MPSF) for the second time this season.

"This was a well deserved win," said second-year SDSU head coach Lev Kirshner. "Every win builds up a team's confidence, but getting a win over ranked opponents lets our players know we are competing at the level we should be."

SDSU, who started five freshmen, took a 1-0 lead late in the match with an Anthony Zoric header at the 66:52 mark. Zoric's first collegiate goal was assisted by Enrique Tovar and Ryan Cook.

Chris Giudicelli would provide an insurance goal, his first score of the year, at 87:51 with Adam Kulpa and Enrique Tovar being credited with the assist. A shot by Kulpa was deflected by a Denver player and Tovar tapped the ball to Giudicelli for the score.

Tovar remains the team's lead scorer with four goals and four assists (12 points) on the year.

SDSU goalkeeper Tim Edwards picked up his second win of the season and second career shutout.

SDSU continues its MPSF schedule with a 2 p.m. match Sunday against Air Force at the Sports Deck.
