SAN DIEGO - San Diego State sophomore Oliver Maiberger, the 13th-ranked player in the nation, defeated Georgia's Brandon Wagner 6-2, 6-2 in the third round of the ITA All-American Championship in Stone Mountain, Ga. on Friday.
Maiberger's victory over Wagner, a member of the Bulldogs 2001 NCAA championship team, advances the Aztec into the quarterfinal round on Saturday. Maiberger, the tournament's eighth-seed, will face third-see and fifth-ranked K.J. Hippensteel of Stanford at the Lincoln Tennis Center on Friday. Maiberger has won his first three matches at the grand slam event in straight sets.
Maiberger has enjoyed recent success against the Cardinal, defeating NCAA champion Alex Kim twice last season, including in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
Other Aztec men's tennis players stayed closer to home, competing in the San Diego All-College Men's Tennis Tournament hosted by the University of San Diego.
Senior Travis Hasson won a pair of matches in Flight 1 singles to advance to the quarterfinal round. Hasson defeated Erin Carrol of Cal Poly 6-1, 6-1 in the first round and Emil Novak of San Diego 6-1, 6-2 in the second round of play.
