COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State junior Alicia Stewart has been named the Mountain West Conference women's cross country athlete of the week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Stewart ran her best 5K race of the season at the Long Beach State Invitational on Oct. 6, finishing eighth out of 46 runners in a season-best time of 18:52.50. The Costa Mesa native paced the Aztecs to their best finish of the season as they placed two other runners in the top 25.
Stewart's time moves her into the league's top-15 5K times this season, a list that until this week was monopolized by Brigham Young.
Stewart is the first SDSU cross country athlete to earn the award this season. The occasion also marks her first career athlete of the week honor.
Stewart and the Aztecs will race at the UC San Diego Invitational Saturday. The meet serves as a final tune up before the team heads to the league championships in Albuquerque, N.M., on Oct. 27.
