San Diego -
Playing with only 10 players for almost the entire second half, the San Diego State women's soccer team fell to Kansas, 1-0, in the final game of the SDSU Invitational Sunday afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck The loss evened the Aztecs season mark at 2-2 while the Jayhawks improved to 3-1-0.
After a scoreless first half, San Diego State found itself shorthanded when forward Kim Rogers received her second yellow card of the game for a late tackle in the 47th minute.
Kansas made the Aztecs pay some 12 minutes later when Hilla Rantala's shot from a tight angle to the right of goal was deflected and found its way past SDSU goalie Linnea Quinones.
Even with the disparity in numbers, the game was evenly played with both teams taking eight shots on the day. Quinones was the busier of the two keepers, making three saves while KU's Meghan Miller was called upon just once.
SDSU's best chances to score fell to forward Kim Castellanos who hit the crossbar late in the first half, then saw a shot glance off the post with 10 minutes left in the contest.
In the first game of the day at the SDSU Invitational, South Carolina got a goal late in the first half to counter an early UNLV strike as the teams played to a 1-1 draw.
Up next for the Aztecs is a match against Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Sept. 14, at 1:00 p.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck. That game will be followed by a men's match against Hofstra at 4:00 p.m.
