San Diego - Two goals midway through the second half propelled the South Carolina Gamecocks to a 2-1 victory over San Diego State in the opening game of the SDSU Invitational at the SDSU Sports Deck Friday afternoon.
It was the first loss of the year of the Aztecs who saw their record dip to 2-1 while South Carolina improved to 2-0-1 on the young season.
The Aztecs got on the board first on a goal by forward Kim Castellanos, her third in three games. Forward Nicole Findlay flicked a pass from defender Becky Prilaman on to Castellanos, who beat a defender and Gamecock goalie Carolyn Ortega in the 16th minute.
Early in the second half, an innocent-looking long ball by USC's Sarah Lentz bounced over the head of Aztec keeper Linnea Quinones, allowing an easy tap in goal by Ashley Gosnell to even the score.
The Gamecocks took the lead some eight minutes later when Melinda Carter got loose down the left flank and crossed a ball into the middle that Meredith McPartland was able to re-direct it past Quinones for the winning goal.
San Diego State recorded a 12-7 shot advantage over the 90 minutes with Quinones making three saves compared to four for Ortega.
In the second game of the day, it was the Kansas Jayhawks (2-1-0) flexing some offensive muscle to defeat UNLV (1-1-1) by a score of 4-0.
Action in the SDSU Invitational continues on Sunday with UNLV and South Carolina squaring off at 10:30 a.m. followed by the Aztecs and Kansas at 12:30 p.m.
Between games on Sunday there will be a special ceremony for Soccer In The Streets (S.I.T.S.), a program that promotes soccer to economically disadvantaged young girls.
