San Diego - San Diego State concluded play in the adidas Classic Sunday afternoon, falling to host Santa Clara, 2-0. The win improved the 10th-ranked Broncos to 7-1-0 while the Aztecs fell to 3-4-0.
Santa Clara was the dominant offensive team on the day with 27 shots compared to three by San Diego State. In the first half, the Broncos had 17 shots while the Aztecs had none.
SCU opened the scoring after 26 minutes when a three-on-two breakaway situation was converted into a goal by Kristi Candau, her first of the season. The Broncos increased their lead to 2-0 in the 42nd minute when U.S. national team player Aly Wagner slotted home a low shot after receiving a pass from teammate Taline Tahmassian.
SDSU senior goalie Linnea Quinones was kept busy all afternoon and was forced into making a season high 10 saves, nine of which came in the first half. Santa Clara's Alyssa Sobolik, who recorded her second shutout of the season, had to make just one stop.
Despite going 0-2 at the adidas Classic, San Diego State had a pair of athletes selected to the all-tournament team. Forward Kim Castellanos, who scored SDSU's lone goal of the weekend in the 2-1 loss to Stanford, and goalkeeper Linnea Quinones, who recorded 19 saves over the Aztecs' two contests, were honored at the conclusion of the Classic.
The Aztec now return home to begin a four-game homestand that starts with a match against Pepperdine on Friday, Oct. 5, at 3:00 p.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck.
