SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's soccer team got its six-match homestand underway with a win Friday defeating UC Riverside, 3-2, at the SDSU Sports Deck.
SDSU (2-4-1) got on the board early when junior Enrique Tovar converted on a penalty kick at 17:44. The score would stay 1-0 in favor of the Aztecs until 45:15 when a pass by junior Tyler Tinling gave freshman Paul Szefler the opportunity to score. Freshman Eric Wohl gave the Aztecs another point at the 54-minute mark. His score was assisted by junior Ryan Cook.
UC Riverside (0-6-1) made things interesting with two quick goals late in the match. The first by freshman J.J. Fritsch at 71:43 and the second off a penalty kick by Juan Gutierrez at 88:38.
Junior goalkeeper Brian Barnes spent all 90 minutes in goal for the Aztecs recording five saves and the win, his first of the season.
SDSU returns to action Sunday with a 4 p.m. match versus Brown. All home matches are held at the SDSU Sports Deck.
