San Diego - San Diego State opened play at the adidas Classic at the University of Santa Clara with a 2-1 loss to eighth-ranked Stanford Friday afternoon at Buck Shaw stadium. The win kept the Cardinal perfect on the season at 6-0-0 while the Aztecs evened their record at 4-4-0.
For the eighth time this season, San Diego State did not allow a first-half goal although Stanford recorded 11 shots to SDSU's 6. The second half produced identical shot totals as the Cardinal outshot the Aztecs 22-12 for the game.
Stanford got on the board first in the 71st minute when forward Marcie Ward stole the ball from an Aztec defender at the corner of the box and beat SDSU goalie Linnea Qui?ones for her fourth goal of the year.
Ward doubled Stanford's advantage 10 minutes later, taking a cross from teammate Amy Grady and knocking it into the net.
San Diego State pulled a goal back in the 89th minute as sophomore forward Kim Castellanos hit an unstoppable shot from 25 yards past Cardinal goalkeeper Carrie Walsh. The goal was the 17th of her career, moving her into seventh place on the SDSU career list, one behind Elicia Petre (1997-2000) who had 18. Castellanos has now scored in four straight games and has notched a goal in seven of the Aztecs' eight contests.
Both keepers were kept busy throughout the contest, with Qui?ones making nine saves on the day and Walsh recording five stops.
San Diego State continues play at the adidas Classic on Sunday (Sept. 30) when they take on the host Santa Clara Broncos, ranked 10th in the nation, at 1:00 p.m.
