San Diego - The California Golden Bears got three goals in the final 10 minutes in a come-from-behind 3-1 win over San Diego State at the SDSU Sports Deck Sunday afternoon. The win improved the 13th-ranked Bears to 6-1-0 on the season while the Aztecs fell to 4-3-0.
A scoreless first half saw the two best chances fall to San Diego State, as a pair of open shots within 10 yards in front of goal went wide and high respectively. However, it didn't take long into the second half for SDSU to take the lead.
A through ball over the top from the midfield line by Arinda Alavarez found forward Kim Castellanos, who fought off two defenders to slip the ball past Cal goalkeeper Mallory Moser at 49:54. As time wound down, that goal looked to be the game winner until the Golden Bears struck three times within seven minutes late in the contest.
In the 81st minute, Cal's Laura Schott picked up an errant back pass at the top of the box. The Aztec defender slipped and Schott faked SDSU keeper Linnea Quinones to the ground before tapping into the open net. Just over two minutes later, a cross from the right by Schott found Kacy Hornor at the top of the box, and the Golden Bear forward chipped the ball over the onrushing Quinones into the net.
Cal finished off the scoring in the 87th minute when a corner kick from Kim Yokers found the head of Hornor, whose shot hit the right post. The rebound went to Schott in front of goal, and she made no mistake with her shot past the stranded Quinones.
California outshot the Aztecs 14-9 on the day and had five corner kicks to SDSU's one. Quinones finished the contest with four saves while Cal's Moser was credited with a pair.
For SDSU's Castellanos, the goal was her sixth in seven games this season and her 16th as an Aztec, moving her into a tie for seventh place on the San Diego State career list. She has now scored a goal in three straight games for the second time this season.
Up next for the Aztecs is a trip north to compete in the Santa Clara adidias Classic. SDSU will take on seventh-ranked Stanford on Friday (Sept. 28) and the sixth-ranked host Broncos on Sunday (Sept. 30).
