FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Larry Ned ran for 177 yards and two touchdowns on a career-high 40 carries to lead San Diego State to a 14-7 victory over Colorado State on Saturday night.
Ned helped San Diego State (1-2, 1-0 Mountan West Conference) compile 370 yards of total offense. Colorado State (1-2, 0-1) was held to 119 yards, the first time since an Oct. 16, 1993 loss at San Diego State that the Rams gained fewer than 200 yards.
San Diego State opened scoring with Ned's 5-yard touchdown run at 8:14 of the first quarter. It capped a 12-play, 84-yard drive.
San Diego State was set to strike again late in the second quarter. But after a 10-play drive that set up a first-and-goal situation at the 3, Colorado State's Justin Gallimore forced a fumble in the end zone and the Rams took over at their own 20. Colorado State went four-and-out on the ensuing series.
San Diego State amassed 19 first downs, while holding Colorado State to just nine on the night.
San Diego State scored again at 9:47 of the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Ned to cap a seven-play, 76-yard drive.
Colorado State didn't get on the board until 7:53 of the fourth quarter, on a 48-yard pass from reserve quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt to Pete Rebstock.
Colorado State had not been shut out in the first half since a 24-0 loss to Air Force on Sept. 20, 1997.
San Diego State's next possession ended with Brian Simjanovski's 64-yard punt, which Colorado State's Dallas Davis returned 55 yards to the San Diego State 20. A Colorado State penalty for illegal use of the hands brought the ball back to the CSU 34 and Colorado State turned the ball over on downs after eight plays.
Colorado State mounted a late rally, as Van Pelt drove the Rams 35 yards in six plays - including two first downs - but the drive sputtered and the game ended with the ball at the 50.
Both teams turned to backup quarterbacks. Adam Hall took over early in the second quarter for Lon Sheriff, who was 18-12 for 113 yards on the night. Hall finished 7-of-5 for 87 yards.
Van Pelt came in with 2:47 to play in the third period in place of starter D.J. Busch. Busch was 16-4-1 for 19 yards and 3 yards rushing. Van Pelt was 13-6 for 77 yards and a touchdown pass.
