San Diego - Senior Nicole Findlay scored twice and sophomore Kim Castellanos added another as San Diego State defeated Eastern Washington, 3-0, at the Montana Diadora Cup in Missoula, Mont. With the win, the Aztecs improved to 2-0 on the young season while the Eagles fell to 0-2.
Just as she did in Friday's game against the host Montana Grizzlies, Findlay opened the scoring for SDSU with a goal in the 18th minute, this time with an assist from Arinda Alvarez. It was Alvarez again playing provider on the 41st minute when she sent the ball to Castellanos who put her shot past EWU goalie Jonna Melton.
Findlay netted her second of the game, and third of the season, in the 66th minute, assisted by midfielder Danielle Small.
San Diego State dominated the game throughout, taking 34 shots compared to four by the Eagles. The Aztecs also had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks on the day.
Aztec goalie Erin Haentjens, making her second start of the year, made one save over the first 65 minutes. Redshirt sophomore Stephanie Pearson came on for the final 25 minutes, making a pair of stops. Meanwhile, EWU's Melton was kept busy making 15 saves.
The 3-0 wins over Montana and Eastern Washington this past weekend marks the first time that the Aztecs have begun a season with back-to-back shutout victories since the 1993 season when they posted 5-0 wins over CSU Fullerton and CSU Dominguez Hills.
Up next for SDSU is next weekend's San Diego State Invitational featuring South Carolina, Kansas and UNLV at the Sports Deck. Action gets underway at 1:00 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 7) when the Aztecs Face South Carolina. That match will be followed by UNLV and Kansas at 3:00 p.m.
