Back In Action
After two weeks away from competition, the San Diego State cross country team continues its 2001 schedule Saturday when it competes in the UC Riverside Invite. The event is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m.
Looking Back
The Aztecs finished eighth in the 20-team field at last year's UC Riverside Invite. The team's top finisher was Allison Brown, who placed ninth overall with a time of 19:23. That same weekend, SDSU took first place at the 13-team Hawai'i Invite placing three runners, Kylie Edwards (18:20), Sophia Hawker (18:23) and Alicia Stewart (18:50), in the top 10. Those three finished third, fourth and ninth, respectively.
Aztec Invite Canceled
The 58th annual Aztec Invitational, scheduled for Sept. 16 in Balboa Park, was canceled due to the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington D.C. and will not be rescheduled. The event was the Aztecs' lone home contest of the season.
SDSU Lately
SDSU got its 2001 campaign started with an eighth-place finish at the CSU Fullerton Jammin' Invitational on Sept. 1. The Aztecs were led by junior Jennifer Stakiw, whose time of 19:43.30 was good for 42nd-place, and Allison Brown's time of 20:22.40, which earned her 69th-place. Amanda Vielbaum (82nd) and Laura Preston (93rd) set personal bests at the meet, finishing in 20:38.70 and 21:03.00, respectively. Rounding out SDSU's top five finishers was Nika Dunn (21:06.70).
2000 Season In Review
SDSU wrapped up its 2000 season with a fifth-place finish at the Mountain West Conference meet in Ft. Collins, Colo. Kylie Edwards had the highest finish of any Aztec, coming in 31st. Brigham Young took home first-place honors followed by Colorado State. The highlight of the Aztecs' regular season came in the form of a first-place finish at the Hawai'i Invite in September.
Coaching Staff
The Aztecs are led by the coaching staff of Rahn Sheffield and Jennifer Nanista. A 1990 graduate of SDSU, Nanista is one of the best middle distance runners to don the scarlet and black. She finished second in the 800 meters at both the 1989 and '90 Big West Conference Championships. She continues to compete as a member of the Sheffield Elite Track Club.
Looking Ahead
SDSU will be in Palo Alto next Saturday (Sept. 23) to compete in the Stanford Invitational. The event is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m. The Aztecs get the October portion of its schedule underway on the 6th when they travel to the Long Beach Invitational. On Oct. 13 the team will be in action at the UNLV and UC San Diego Invites, before heading to Albuquerque, N.M. for the Mountain West Conference championships on Oct. 27.
