San Diego -
A goal by sophomore Kim Castellanos five minutes into overtime gave the San Diego State women's soccer team a hard-fought 3-2 win over Cal State Fullerton Monday afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck. With the win, the Aztecs move to 3-2 on the season while the Titans' record drops to 1-4.
The game was a tale of two halves as SDSU raced out to a 2-0 lead at the break. Senior defender Fay deLeon opened the scoring in the third minute of the game, launching a high looping shot from 45 yards that sailed over Titan Goalie Laura Janke's head into the net. Another long ball from deLeon in the 27th minute set up fellow senior Jane Specht for a shot, and she took advantage of it to record her first goal of the season.
However, Fullerton came out strong for the second half, and tied the game in a three-minute span midway through the period. In the 62nd minute, midfiedler Michele Bannister played a short corner to Eric Jacalone, whose cross found the head of teammate Tennli Ulicny, who nodded the ball in to cut the deficit in half. Almost exactly three minutes later, Ulicny's long flip throw was knocked into the goal by Bannister.
But in the end, it was again deLeon who was the catalyst on the winning goal. After intercepting a pass in the Aztec end of the field, she made a 60-yard run before firing a cross from the right side that Castellanos caught on the full volley and sent into the upper right corner of the net.
In what turned out to be an evenly fought contest, the Titans outshot SDSU 18-16. Janke finished the day with five saves while Aztec goalie Linnea Quinones record four. Fullerton's physical style of play resulted in 26 fouls against the Titans compared to nine by San Diego State.
With her goal, Castellanos has moved into a tied for the number-10 spot on the Aztec career goal list with 14. In addition, deLeon's four points (1 goal, 2 assists) moved her up to number six on the SDSU career points list with 52.
Up next for the Aztecs is a match at UC Riverside on Tuesday (Sept. 18). San Diego State returns home on Sunday, Sept. 23, to take on 13th-ranked California at 1:00 p.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck.
