Sept. 10, 2001
THIS WEEK
San Diego State (2-2-0) continues a four-match homestand on Friday, Sept. 14, when it hosts Cal State Fullerton (1-3-0) at 1:00 p.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck. On Sunday (Sept. 16), the Aztecs face Duke (2-2-0) at 1:00 p.m. at the same site.
Both matches are the front end of SDSU men's-women's doubleheaders as the Aztec men take on Hofstra on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and Albany on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
SERIES RECORDS
San Diego State has won five of its previous six meeting with Cal State Fullerton. The teams met annually from 1993 to 1998, with the Aztecs winning each year except 1995.
SDSU will be meeting Duke for the first time on the soccer field.
LAST WEEK
After scoring six times in its opening two matches, the Aztecs could only manage one goal in two games last weekend as they fell to South Carolina (2-1) and Kansas (1-0) at home.
Against South Carolina, Sophomore Kim Castellanos opened the scoring with a first-half goal only to have the Gamecocks connect twice in the second half for the win.
In the Kansas contest, SDSU played shorthanded for the final 43 minutes after forward Kim Rogers was sent off following her second yellow card of the match. The Jayhawks took advantage of the situation, scoring their lone goal in the 59th minute to secure the win.
CLEGG SEEKS 100TH WIN
Chuck Clegg is his ninth season in charge of the SDSU women's soccer program with a record of 98-55-5 (.636). A pair of wins this weekend would reward him with his 100th win as head coach of the Aztec women. He would become the 48th coach in NCAA women's soccer history to achieve that milestone.
Clegg coached the women in 1989, the first year of the program, then relinquished that position to concentrate on the Aztec men's program which he headed from 1982 to 1999. He was head coach of both the SDSU men and women from 1994 through 1999 before retiring from the men's program after the 1999 campaign.
His final record as coach of the SDSU men was 194-134-9 (.592).
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Cal State Fullerton (1-3-0) comes to San Diego after securing its first win of the season last Sunday, a 5-0 home victory over Stonybrook. Among its three losses was a 3-2 setback to number-three ranked Portland at the FILA Classic in Denver on Labor Day. Freshman Kellie Cox leads the Titan offense with three goals while another freshman, Erica Jacalone, has a goal and three assists. Freshman defender Tawnie Pedrin, who has started all four of CSF's games, is a graduate of Bonita Vista High.
Duke opened its season with a 3-0 win over Davidson, but has found the going rough since that contest. A 1-0 loss to Maryland at home in the ACC opener for both schools was followed by a 5-1 home defeat at the hands of No. 8-ranked Penn State. A 1-0 win over UNC Charlotte last Sunday evened the Blue Devils' record at 2-2. Duke returns its top four scorers from a year ago, led by Sarah Pickens who has scored twice already this season. The Blue Devils, who were ranked as high as 17th in the preseason polls, will play at University of San Diego on Friday prior to visiting the Sports Deck Sunday afternoon.
CASTELLANOS STREAK HALTED
Kim Castellanos had her three-game scoring streak halted in Sunday's 1-0 loss to Kansas. The sophomore forward from San Diego had scored a goal in each of the Aztecs first three matches.
She came close to scoring on two occasions against the Jayhawks, hitting the crossbar in the first half and the right post in the second half.
With her next goal, Castellanos will move into a tie for the number-10 spot on the SDSU career goal list. It will be the 14th of her Aztec career, tying Reese Cicchinelli, who had 14 goals in four seasons (1991-92, 1994-95) at San Diego State. Three players are tied for seventh on the career goal chart with 16.
LOCAL CONNECTION
Seven of the Aztecs' 11 starters last Sunday vs. Kansas were players from the San Diego area. The entire Aztec defense is comprised of local players.
That number included Linnea Qui?ones (GK-Bonita Vista HS), Fay deLeon (D-Horizon HS), Lyn Splittgerber (D-Mt. Carmel HS/Palomar JC), Shawni Flint (D-El Capitan HS) and Rebecca Prilaman (D-El Capitan HS).
The other two local products who started were forwards Kim Castellanos (Rancho Bernardo HS) and Arinda Alvarez (Chula Vista HS).
In addition, reserve midfielders Nikki Torruella (Grossmont HS) and Jessica Roysdon (Valhalla HS) came off the bench to see significant playing time.
AMONG THE LEADERS
Although she did not have an assist last weekend, junior Arinda Alvarez continues to lead the Mountain West Conference in assists with three.
Nicole Findlay's two game-winning goals during the opening weekend of play also lead the league.
Erin Haentjan's goals against average of 0.00 in 155 minutes is the best among the MWC's goalkeepers this week.
Castellanos and Findlay are tied for second in the conference in points with seven apiece (three goals, one assist).
AZTEC NOTES
The loss to Kansas ended a string of eight games going back to last season in which San Diego State had not been shut out. The last time the Aztecs were blanked prior to last Sunday was at Utah (2-0) on October 14 of last year.
Through the first four games of the 2001 season, the Aztecs have not allowed a goal in the first half.
SDSU is averaging 18.8 shots a game compared to eight per contest by opponents. That mark is tops among Mountain West Conference teams, with UNLV second at 15.75 per game. In addition, the Aztecs hold a two-to-one margin (30-14) over foes in corner kicks.
