Aztecs Punish No. 36 Toreros

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's volleyball team defeated the nationally ranked USD Toreros in a four-game battle at Peterson Gym in the final match of the SDSU Inn Suites Invitational. This marks the first win for the Aztecs against the Toreros since a five-game win in 1996.

The Toreros took the first game 30-28, but the Aztecs fought back to win three straight with scores of 30-21, 30-12 and 30-19. The win gives the Aztecs their first 3-0 season-start since 1996, when they finished the year 22-11 and 13-3 in conference.

Three State players registered double-doubles in the match, including junior Nicole Akporiaye with 15 kills and 11 digs, senior Katie Magnuson with 13 kills and 17 digs and sophomore Aspen McPartland with 11 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Zlatina Anguelova added to the victory with 11 kills and five digs in the match. Sophomore Robyn Gregg seemed unstoppable with a career-high seven service aces in the game. Gregg totaled 12 aces in the tournament. Akporiaye, Anguelova and Melissa Wright were all named to the all-tournament team.

SDSU finished the battle with 17 team blocks and .279 hitting percentage versus USD's three team blocks and .101.

Noel Frohman led the Toreros with 13 kills and 13 digs and was followed by Jocelyne Roy's nine kills and 15 digs.

The SDSU spikers slam back into action at the Kathy Trosclair Tournament, Sept. 7-8, in New Orleans. The Aztecs will defend their undefeated record when the face off with SMU, Louisiana-Monroe and Tulane. The Aztecs will return home Sept. 10 for a match against Seton Hall at 5 p.m. inside SDSU's Peterson Gym.
