San Diego - San Diego State got goals from three different players en route to a 3-0 win over Montana in first-round action at the Montana Diadora Cup in Missoula. The victory over the defending Big Sky champion marked the fourth year in a row that the Aztecs have opened their season with a win.
SDSU opened the scoring in the 18th minute when senior Nicole Findlay took a ball from Kim Castellanos and put it past Grizzlie goalie Katie Peck. Findaly has enjoyed her two season openers as a member of the Aztec squad after scoring twice on opening day last season in the Aztecs' 2-1 win over Mississippi.
San Diego State doubled its advantage just after halftime when junior defender Hannah Garl scored off an assist from Arinda Alvarez. It was Garl's first career goal as an Aztec and gave SDSU a 2-0 in the 47th minute.
Kim Castellanos, the 2000 Mountain West Conference co-freshman of the year, rounded out the scoring with an unassisted effort in the 76th minute.
Aztec goalkeeper Erin Haentjens recorded her second career shutout after making three saves on the day. Haentjens got the start in the absence of Linnea Quinones who is competing with the Mexican national team at the World University Games in China.
SDSU outshot the Grizzlies 21-13 with Montana's Katie Peck recording seven saves.
The Aztecs conclude play at the Diadora Cup on Sunday when they take on Eastern Washington at noon (MDT). EWU fell to Toledo, 2-1, in the opening game of the tournament.
