The San Diego State women's volleyball team made its 2001 debut Friday night with a three-game sweep of Liberty in the first day of play in the Inn Suites Invitational at Peterson Gym on the SDSU campus.

The Aztecs prevailed by  scores of 30-19, 30-23, 31-29 in its first action under the NCAA rule change that features rally scoring.

Earlier in the day in the tournament, the University of San Diego swept Loyola-Chicago, 30-27, 30-23, 30-25.

SDSU was led by Zlatina Anguelova, a sophomore from Bulgaria. Her 12 kills and .706 hitting percentage led the Aztecs. The only other Aztec to reach double figures in kills was Aspen McPartland with 10.

As a team, San Diego State hit .370 to Liberty's .175. San Diego State won its season opener for the first time since 1996 when it defeated Minnesota in the USD tournament.

"It is always good to start your season off with a win," said San Diego State head coach Mark Warner. "I was pleased with the effort, but I think we need to learn to control the court better."
