San Diego - San Diego State outfielder Anthony Gwynn and right-handed pitcher Mike Moat have been named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American honorable mention team by Collegiate Baseball.
Gwynn (Poway HS) concluded his first season as an Aztec with a .318 batting average. Despite missing a month of the season with a broken hand suffered in the game against UCLA on April 10, he led the team in runs scored with 48 and triples with four. He was also second on the team in stolen bases with 19 and sacrifice bunts with five. He earned all-tourney honors at the Caballeros Classic and Hormel Food Classic, and has been invited to the USA Baseball National Team Trials to be held later this month in Tucson, Ariz.
Moat (Longmont, Colo., Niwot HS) compiled a record of 2-2 with a 5.74 earned run average. Primarily a middle reliever, he made 23 appearances as a freshman including three starts. Opponents hit just .258 against him this past season.
Gwynn and Moat are the second and third members of the current squad to earn this honor from Collegiate Baseball as sophomore pitcher Rory Shortell was named a freshman honorable mention All-American after the 2000 season.
