Aztec Softball Places Three Student-Athletes on League Academic Team

June 25, 2001

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State softball players Sandra Durazo, Janna Kovensky, Kelcy Murphy and Aubrey Ray were selected to the 2001 Mountain West all-academic softball team. The 43-member team consists of student-athletes who maintain a grade-point average of 3.0 or better, completed at least one semester at the school and are a starter or significant member of the team.

Durazo, who just completed her senior season, earned first team all-region honors and was named the conference pitcher of the year this season. A native of Granada Hills, Calif., Durazo finished the campaign with a 30-15 record and a 1.97 earned run average. She posted single-season school records in 2001 in victories, appearances, games started, complete games, innings pitched and strikeouts. She was also selected to the Los Angeles Region team as the Aztecs advanced to NCAA postseason play for the first time in school history.

Kovensky, a freshman on the squad, stared and played in 65 of San Diego State's 66 games this season. A native of San Diego, Kovensky was a staple in the Aztec outfield this season, while hitting .285 with a team-high four home runs and 25 runs batted in. The center fielder was the Aztecs leading hitter in the NCAA tournament, batting .462 with one home run and three RBI as San Diego State advanced to the regional championship game against eventual NCAA runner-up UCLA.

Murphy, a freshman who was originally slated to redshirt, saw action in 33 games and made 27 starts. She hit .169 on the season with 12 runs batted in for San Diego State.

The third freshman from San Diego State to make the squad, Ray saw action in 31 games. She hit .091 on the year with five runs scored.

San Diego State, which ended the season 41-25, advanced to the final day of region play in their first NCAA tournament appearance, a distinction only 16 schools can claim. Both of the Aztecs NCAA losses came to second-ranked UCLA on the Bruins home field. San Diego State set school records for both victories and winning percentage in 2001.
