The University of Utah jumped out to a 10-run lead after three innings and went on to defeat San Diego State, 13-3, in a game played at Franklin Covey Field in Salt Lake City Friday afternoon.
The loss was the Aztecs' fifth in their last six games, and dropped SDSU's record to 28-22 (16-10 Mountain West Conference). With the win, the Utes improved to 24-25 (12-14 MWC)
Utah jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage in the first, opening the game with back-to-back singles and a home run by Nate Weese. The Utes broke the game open two innings later, scoring seven times in the third. With one out, Aztec starter Mike Moat (2-1) gave up a pair of walks and hit a batter before Brit Pannier cleared the bases with a double into right center field. Utah added four more runs (three unearned) in the inning to open up a 10-run lead.
Ute starter Jason Wylie (3-3) held the Aztecs in check, allowing just three hits through six inning before SDSU got on the board with a pair of runs in the seventh. Ben Leuthard's single brought in Darrell Bowles from second, and an RBI ground out by Garrett Cook allowed Sean Pierce to come in from third.
The Aztecs added one more run in the eighth on an RBI single by freshman Chad Corona that scored Taber Lee, who had led off the inning with a single and promptly stole second base.
Lee extended his hitting streak to 12 games, going 2-for-4. With a pair of singles, he also made it 10 consecutive multiple-hit contests. Ben Leuthard also had a good day at the plate with a pair of singles, a double and a run batted in.
