NORRISTOWN, Penn. - San Diego State's freshman two-meter player, Holly Hartzell (Vista, Calif., Fallbrook High School), was named a second-team All-American for the 2001 season by the American Water Polo Coaches Association.
A member of the USA Junior National Team, a gold medalist at the 2000 Junior Pan Am Games and the 2000 CIF Player of the Year, Hartzell led the Aztecs in scoring with 90 goals. Hartzell was also named to the all-MPSF second team and first-team all-tournament at the National Collegiate Select Tournament earlier this month.
After only one season, Hartzell ranks second on the SDSU single-season goals list and is ninth in career goals. The freshman led the Aztecs in scoring in 14 games and scored a career-high six goals in a 10-2 victory over Hartwick at the National Collegiate Select Championship on May 5th.
The eighth-ranked San Diego State women's water polo finished the 2001 campaign with a 23-16, record which included a 4-6 mark in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contests. The Aztecs finished second at the National Collegiate Select Championship and seventh at the MPSF Championship.
