San Diego - San Diego State freshman outfielder Anthony Gwynn has joined teammate Royce Ring as one of 25 players invited to participate in the 2001 USA Baseball National Team Trials to be held in Tucson, Arizona, June 16-19. Gwynn is among the six players added by USA Baseball to the initial list of 19 athletes named in early May.
The USA National Team, comprised of the top freshmen and sophomore collegiate players from across the nation, will be selected from the pool of 25 players. Additional players could be added to the Trials, depending on the outcome of the College World Series or players injured during the postseason.
Gwynn (Poway HS) recently finished his freshman season at SDSU with a .318 batting average, 48 runs scored, eight doubles, four triples, 23 RBI and 19 stolen bases. He missed 16 games in April and May after suffering a broken hand in the Aztecs' contest vs. UCLA on April 10.
Ring, a 6-0 left-hander from San Diego (Monte Vista HS), was the Aztecs' closer during the 2001 season. In 32 appearances out of the bullpen (37.2 innings), he compiled a record of 6-2 with nine saves and a 1.19 earned run average while striking out 45 and walking only eight.
With the addition of Gwynn, San Diego State is one of six schools to have two players invited to the Trials. The others include Stanford, Texas, Georgia Tech, Miami and Cal State Fullerton.
Team USA will play approximately 30 games on the Red, White and Blue Summer Tour, beginning June 22 with the 30th annual USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series, which this year will be played in Japan.
Mississippi State's Pat McMahon will serve as head coach for Team USA. The official team roster will be determined and announced on June 19.
