SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's golf team has been selected to compete at the 2001 NCAA East Regional in Chapel Hill, N.C., May 10-12. This marks the Aztecs second appearance at the NCAA Regionals under head coach Diana Falar.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the University of North Carolina, will be played at the par 72, 6,211-yard Finley Golf Course. Eighteen holes will be played each day with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. (EST).
"We are very excited to be competing in the postseason," said Falar. "Our team has worked extremely hard this season and deserve this opportunity."
No. 53 Aztecs (Golfweek poll) will be the 14th seed among a 21-team field including No. 1 Duke, No. 5 Auburn, No. 6 Georgia, No. 11 Pepperdine, No. 15 Texas Christian, No. 16 Northwestern, No. 18 Wake Forest, No. 20 Vanderbuilt, No. 23 South Carolina, No. 26 New Mexico, No. 32 Michigan, No. 34 San Jose State, No. 41 North Carolina, No. 43 Florida State, No. 45 Campbell, No. 49 Kansas State, South Florida, Jackson State, Charleston Southern and Louisville. Michell Simpson of Florida International and Stephanie George of Radford will compete as individuals.
The top eight teams and top two individuals advance to the NCAA Championships to be played May 23-26 at the Mission Inn Resort in Howie-in-the-Hill, Fla. Purdue hosts the central regional, while Oregon State serves as host of the west.
SDSU kicked off it's postseason tying for second with Colorado State at the Mountain West conference Championship with a 54-total of 887. New Mexico captured tis second MWC title witha 861. Senior Jo Clingan turned in the top Aztec finish in fifth with a 218. Her performance the year earned her a spot on the 2001 All-Mountain West Conference team.
