SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's track and field team combined to score 105 points Saturday, but it wasn't enough to over take Brigham Young or Colorado State, as the Aztecs finished the 2001 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in third place. The Aztecs finished with a school-record 148 total points over the four-day competition. BYU, which entered the meet ranked No. 3 in the most recent Trackwire poll, combined for 229.83 points, while Colorado State finished up with 164.33.
"We fired with everything we had today," said SDSU head coach Rahn Sheffield, who was voted the Mountain West Conference's women's coach of the year following the meet. "Those athletes who got the best of us today had to run (personal records) to beat us. So I was proud of our overall effort and I think it was a good week for the Aztecs, but we have to keep building."
Thirty of San Diego State's 148 points came from senior Aja Frary, who finished as the meet's high-point scorer. Frary, who won the heptathlon on Thursday, shattered her personal best in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing the one lap in 59.86. She also placed fifth in the 100 hurdles and ran on both of SDSU's conference champion 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.
"When the spotlight comes on, Aja is always ready to go," Sheffield said of the Aztec senior who competed in a total of 15 events over the four-day meet. "She blew a hole in this meet. We will put someone in her place next year, but she will never be replaced."
Junior Daveetta Shepherd, who ran a 2001 conference seasonal-best of 13.19 in the 100 hurdles during Friday's prelims, came back Saturday to take second in that race in the finals. She also took third in the 100 meters.
Freshman Melinda Smedley also had a strong Saturday for SDSU, placing second in both the 100 and 200 meters.
Other Aztecs who put points on the board during the final day of competition included senior Promise Mose, who finished second in the 400 with a season-best time of 54.30 and sixth in the 200, and senior Marisa Taylor, who placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 38-10.50.
SDSU's biggest surprise performance of the day, however, may have been turned in by freshman Candace Hill. Hill who turned heads with her fifth-place performance in the discus on Friday, threw a college-best 45-07.25 in the shot put on Saturday to take fourth.
