SAN DIEGO - Senior Aimee Crabtree and junior Tricia Gutierrez each cleared 12'-9" to finish 1-2 in the pole vault and senior Aja Frary collected another six points for San Diego State by placing third in the long jump as the Aztecs finished the third day of competition at the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in third place with 43 points.

Brigham Young, which scored 75 points on the day, including 10 by Elizabeth Jackson who set a new American record in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:55.63, leads the eight-team field. Colorado State, which swept the top five spots in the discus, stands in second with 62 points.

As expected, the Aztecs also fared well in the sprints and hurdles, advancing four athletes out of the preliminaries in the 200 meters, two in the 100-meter hurdles and two in the 400-meter hurdles.

"Today went great four us and every little bit we got today is going to help us tomorrow," said SDSU head coach Rahn Sheffield, who got some points from unexpected places like freshman Candace Hill in the discus and junior Karen Erkkila and sophomore Abbey Huchel in the pole vault.

"The big show is (Saturday). Our goal was to stay close today in order to have a shot tomorrow. I think we accomplished that goal. The athletes really stepped up and they are doing a great job right now."

The fourth and final day of competition on the Choc Sportsman Oval begins at 10:30 a.m. with the men's hammer. Running events start at 2 p.m. with the 4x100 relay.
