SAN DIEGO - San Diego State pitcher Ben Julianel hurled a complete-game shutout and set a Mountain West Conference tournament record with 16 strikeouts as the Aztecs blanked Air Force, 8-0, Thursday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium in a Mountain West Conference tournament elimination game.
San Diego State, now 32-25, will advance to Friday's action against an opponent still to be determined at 3 p.m.
Julianel walked just two hitters and faced only 32 batters. He has now completed 14 straight scoreless innings.
As a staff, San Diego State pitchers (three pitchers through two tournament games) have thrown 18 innings. They have allowed one run on 12 hits while picking up 26 strikeouts.
The Aztecs struck early against the Falcons, scoring three times in the first inning with help from a pair of Air Force errors. The Academy committed five errors on the day.
Six San Diego State players had at least two hits with third baseman Pilar Amaya leading the way with three safeties. Freshman Anthony Gwynn drove in two runs on two hits and a sacrifice fly.
