SAN DIEGO - San Diego State's Aja Frary ran a career-best 14.00 in the 100-meter hurdles, threw season-best 36'-10 1/4" in the shot put and won the 200 meters with a time of 24.42 to finish with 3335 points after the opening day in the heptathlon competition of the 2001 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday on the Choc Sportsman Oval at the SDSU Sports Deck.
However, it wasn't enough to get past surprise entrant Kirsten Bolm of Brigham Young, who closed out the first four events with 3605 points to lead the nine-athlete field. Bolm, who is competing in her first career heptathlon, clocked a 13.60 to win the 100 hurdles win and cleared 5'-10" to take the high jump before placing third in the shot put and second in the 200 meters.
Frary enters the final three events in second overall, while Aztec sophomore Leslie Miller stands in eighth place. Miller posted season-bests in the 100 hurdles and 200 meters and a personal best in the high jump.
Competition in the heptathlon at 2001 Mountain West Conference championships continues on Thursday beginning at 1:30 p.m. with the long jump. Individual events begin on Friday at 11 a.m.
