SAN DIEGO - A run-scoring double off the bat of Air Force shortstop Brian LaBasco in the eighth inning propelled the Falcons to a 7-5 come-from-behind win over San Diego State at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Sunday.
Air Force (23-31 overall, 8-21 Mountain West Conference) led for the majority of the game, but fell behind in the bottom of the seventh when LaBasco committed a throwing error that scored SDSU left fielder Rah-Miel Mitchell from third base to give the Aztecs (31-24 overall, 19-11 MWC) a 6-5 lead.
Falcon designated hitter Mike Thiessen tied the game in the eighth when he singled in Tony Shockley, then came around with what was the game winner after LaBasco doubled him in. Air Force added an insurance run to bring the score to 7-5.
Freshman Mike Moat suffered the loss for SDSU, dropping to 2-2 on the year. David Diehl secured the win for Air Force, holding the Aztecs scoreless in 2.2 innings and allowing only two hits.
First baseman Cody Haven led the way offensively for SDSU with a 3-for-4 effort.
The game marked Air Force's first win over the Aztecs in San Diego since 1989.
Sunday's game was the final regular season contest for the Aztecs. SDSU will be the second seed in next week's Mountain West Conference tournament played at Tony Gwynn Stadium, where they will open up with seventh-seeded UNLV at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The Aztecs took five of six from the Rebels during the regular season.
