San Diego - UCLA ended an eight-game losing streak while San Diego State suffered its fourth consecutive loss as the Bruins defeated the Aztecs, 3-1, at Jackie Robinson Stadium Tuesday evening. The win improved UCLA's season mark to 26-20. SDSU fell to 27-21 on the year.
With both teams facing crucial conference contests this coming weekend, the schools used a total of 11 pitchers in what turned out to be the second low-scoring affair between the Aztecs and Bruins this season. Last month, UCLA defeated San Diego State 3-2 at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Bruins got on the board first, scoring a single run in the third inning on back-to-back singles by Josh Canales and Matt Pearl. Brian Baron's infield ground out to scored Canales from third base. Baron added a second RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fifth as the Bruins added a pair of runs in that frame. The second came on an RBI single by Ben Francisco.
SDSU struck back with a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Andy Litteral that scored Rah-Miel Mitchell who had doubled with one out.
Just as they did in San Diego, the Aztecs threatened in the ninth, putting men on first and second with one out, but UCLA reliever Kevin Jerkens got the final tow outs to record his fifth save of the year.
Starter Bobby Rowe (4-2) picked up the win for the Bruins while John Skinner (3-4) took the loss in relief of starter Mike Garber. Aztecs Taber Lee and Sean Pierce continued their hot hitting, each going 2-for-4.
The Aztecs will travel to Salt Lake City on Wednesday for a three-game conference series with Utah beginning Thursday (May 3) at noon (MDT).
