The San Diego State women's golf team has been selected to compete at the 2001 NCAA east regional in Chapel Hill, N.C., May 10-12. The Aztecs last competed at the regionals in 1999 and 2001 marks their second appearance under head coach Diana Falar.
The Event
The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the University of North Carolina, will be played at the par 72, 6,211-yard Finley Golf Course. Eighteen holes will be played each day with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. (EST).
The top eight teams and top two individuals advance to the NCAA Championships to be played May 23-26 at the Mission Inn Resort in Howie-in-the-Hill, Fla. Purdue hosts the central regional while Oregon State serves as host of the west.
The Field
The 53rd-ranked Aztecs (Golfweek) will compete in a 21-team field including No. 1 Duke, No. 5 Auburn, No. 6 Georgia, No. 11 Pepperdine, No. 15 Texas Christian, No. 16 Northwestern, No. 18 Wake Forest, No. 20 Vanderbilt, No. 23 South Carolina, No. 26 New Mexico, No. 32 Michigan, No. 34 San Jose State, No. 41 North Carolina, No. 43 Florida State, No. 45 Campbell, No. 49 Kansas State, South Florida, Jackson State, Charleston Southern and Louisville. Michelle Simpson of Florida International and Stephanie George of Radford will compete as individuals.
The Aztec Lineup
San Diego State will be represented at the regionals by senior Jo Clingan, junior Heather Rollo, sophomore Jennifer Hoene and freshmen Sandy Kim and Shayna Miyajima. The individualists competing this week have turned in 20 top-20 finishes, nine top-10 finishes, six top-five finishes, and they have claimed one individual title in the 2000-01 season.
The MWC Championship
SDSU kicked off its postseason with a second-place tie with Colorado State at the Mountain West Conference Championship with a 54-hole total of 887. New Mexico captured its second MWC title with an 861. Clingan turned in the top Aztec finish at fifth with a 218. Her performance this year earned her a spot on the 2001 all-Mountain West Conference team. Rollo turned in the next best Aztec finish in sixth with a 222.
Rollo Continues To Be Solid
Junior Heather Rollo has turned in the top finish in five of the six tournaments for the Aztecs this spring and has finished in the top 12 in every competition. She opened the season with a fifth-place finish at the Lady Aztec Spring Invitational with a 77. Rollo had her best finish at the Bay Area Classic, placing second with a 149 (74-75). The performance earned her Mountain West Golfer of the Week honors on March 1st. Rollo also earned the golfer of the week honors for the week of April 18th after tying for 12th at the Peg Barnard Collegiate April 14th. Rollo finished sixth at the Mountain West Conference Championship with a 222.
Clingan Named All-Conference
After a fifth-place finish at the MWC Championship, Jo Clingan was named to the MWC all-conference team. Clingan finished in the top 16 on six occasions this season, turned in three top-five finishes and claimed the individual title at the Heather Farr Memorial on Oct. 10th. She also holds the lowest Aztecs stroke average with a 75.9.
