SAN DIEGO - Junior second baseman Sarah Hershman singled home junior left fielder Kellie Nordhagen with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift San Diego State softball to a doubleheader sweep of Colorado State, 4-1 and 2-1, on Friday afternoon at SDSU Field.
The Aztecs ran their season-best Mountain West Conference win streak to four games and provided Sandra Durazo with two more victories. The Aztec senior right-hander pitched two complete games to improve to 23-11 overall. She is two wins shy of tying her school record for victories in the season which she set last season with 25.
The Aztecs struck first in the opener. Junior right fielder Tiffany Goudy doubled to right-center field and scored one batter later on a sacrifice fly from Nordhagen to put the Aztecs on top 1-0.
San Diego State added to its advantage in the third frame without the benefit of a hit. Two walks and an error led to an unearned run and gave the Aztecs a 2-0 lead.
The Aztecs added an insurance run in the fourth inning when freshman center fielder Janna Kovenski scored on a Hershman ground out after opening the fourth inning with a triple.
Meanwhile, Durazo was well on the way to another victory. The Aztecs all-time leader in every pitching category retired 14 consecutive batters at one point and scattered only three hits in the first contest.
Durazo and Colorado State freshman Megan Masser hooked up in a pitcher's dual in the second game. Masser pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and one run, while Durazo pitched seven innings, allowing seven hits and one run.
The Rams broke open a scoreless game with a run in the sixth inning. Left fielder Katie Benton lifted a one-out sacrifice fly, scoring Amanda Kocis. Although the Rams took a 1-0 lead in the inning, they left the bases loaded and were only able to score the single run despite getting the leadoff batter aboard in five straight innings.
The Aztecs tied the game in the sixth inning. After two outs, the Aztecs benefited from three walks and a single by freshman catcher Shauna Fisher to even the score.
That set the stage for Nordhagen's seventh-inning heroics. The victory marked the 13th time this season the Aztecs have won in their final at bat.
San Diego State improves to 34-21 overall and 9-7 in Mountain West Conference play while Colorado State falls to 9-34 overall and 6-11 in league play. The Aztecs conclude their regular-season schedule with a doubleheader against New Mexico on Sunday. Game time is set for 1 p.m. PDT at SDSU Field.
