Men's Tennis Defeates New Mexico In Close Match

U.S. AIR FORCE, Colo. - The No. 56 San Diego State Men's Tennis team (11-9, 5-0 MWC) is the only remaining undefeated Mountain West Conference team after defeating New Mexico (13-5, 3-1 MWC), in nearly a seven-hour match, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Air Force.

The Aztecs got off to a good start by winning the doubles point, 2-1. Sophomore Oliver Maiberger and senior Adam Webster of SDSU defeated Takeshi Itoh and and Bart Scott of New Mexico, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles. Junior Travis Hasson and Matt Bere of SDSU defeated Andrew Irving and Brent Salazar of New Mexico, 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.

San Diego State managed to win three of the singles matches to claim the victory, while five of the six matches went to three sets. Bere won the deciding match at No. 6 singles in three tie-break sets against Irving, 7-6(5), 6-7(2), 7-6(5). Maiberger continued his winning streak by defeating Itoh, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles and Hasson defeated John Kowalski, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 5 singles.
