SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - San Diego State sophomore golfer Lars Johansson won individual honors at the Western Intercollegiate, Tuesday at the Pasatiempo Golf Course, in a playoff. SDSU placed 14th overall with a three-round total of 896 (284-301-311).
Johansson scored a 206 (65-67-74) to tie with Jason Higton of Pacific (71-65-70). Johansson teed-off into the trees and still managed to par the playoff hole to claim the victory. The last Aztec to win the Western Intercollegiate was Ron O'Connor in 1960. Golf professionals Dusty Waldorf, Scott Simpson, Tom Watson, Peter Jacobson and Bobby Clampett are a few others who have won the Western Intercollegiate.
SDSU fell from fifth to 14th after scoring a 311 on the third round. The Aztecs were tied for first after the first round with a 284. Oregon won the tournament with an 850 (284-287-279).
The Aztecs are next in action at the Ben Hogan Cougar Classic April 20-21.
