FT. COLLINS, Colo. - The 46th-ranked and second-seeded San Diego State women's tennis team was narrowly defeated in the title match of the 2001 Mountain West Conference championship Saturday losing, 4-3, to 31st-ranked and top-seeded Brigham Young.
BYU (15-8) earned the doubles point by winning at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. In singles play, BYU struck first with Cougar Lindsey Ferrell defeating Aztec Julie Chidley, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 6 position. SDSU responded by winning matches in the No. 2, 4 and 5 positions with Silvia Tornier, Katja Karrento and Katey Becker posting wins at those spots respectively.
Eventually, the match became tied at 3 points with the deciding point coming from No. 3 singles. After two hours and ten minutes of play, BYU's Lu Oswald defeated SDSU's Whitney Wells, 7-5, 6-4, to win the title match.
The Aztecs are 17-8 and 6-1 in league with their only losses to conference opponents being 4-3 decisions to BYU. SDSU will have to wait until May 3 to learn whether they earn an at-large bid into the NCAA championship.
