SALT LAKE CITY - Senior right-hander Sandra Durazo pitched a pair of complete games and junior right fielder Tiffany Goudy went 3-for-7, with a triple, home run and four runs scored as San Diego State swept Utah in a softball doubleheader 6-2 and 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Ute Field.
The doubleheader sweep marks the first time the Aztecs have won both ends of a doubleheader against a conference foe this season and is the first time that Utah, the defending conference champion, has ever been swept at home in Mountain West Conference play.
Durazo, who on Wednesday earned her fourth Mountain West Conference pitcher of the week honor this season, recorded victories number 20 and 21 on the season. The senior allowed two runs on four hits in the opener before pitching a three-hit shutout in the second game. For the afternoon, Durazo pitched 14.0 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs. She did not allow a run in her final 11.1 innings of work.
In the opener, the Utes scored single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Aztecs rallied to tie the score with RBI singles by sophomore catcher Kristina Kirk in the fourth inning and junior left fielder Kellie Nordhagen in the fifth inning. Nordhagen, who went 4-for-8 on the afternoon, knocked in Goudy with the game-tying run, who tripled earlier in the frame.
The Aztecs took control of the contest with a four-run sixth inning. The Aztecs received base hits from freshman designated player Shannon Flynn, freshman shortstop Joann Figueroa, Goudy and Nordhagen to help take advantage of three Utah errors in the inning.
In the nightcap Durazo got all the offensive support she would need from Goudy. The junior hit her third home run of the season in the first inning to give San Diego State a 1-0 lead. Two innings later, Goudy walked and would later steal home to put the Aztecs up 2-0.
That was all Durazo would need. She claimed her third victory in two days by allowing just three hits and facing four batters over the minimum.
With the sweep, the Aztecs improve to 32-21 overall and 7-7 in Mountain West Conference play while the Utes fall to 34-20-1 overall and 10-5-1 in league play. San Diego State, which won the season series from Utah 3-1, returns home to face Colorado State in a doubleheader on Friday. Game time at SDSU Field is set for 1 p.m. PDT.
