PROVO, Utah - The Brigham Young University baseball team rallied from a 12-7 deficit in the eighth inning to pick up a 13-12 win over San Diego State on Saturday at Larry H. Miller Park in Provo, Utah.
With the win, BYU improved to 29-17 overall and 17-7 in Mountain West Conference play. SDSU fell to 27-20 and 15-9.
After scoring five runs in the first inning, the Aztecs led the Cougars all game. However, BYU was able to score two runs in the eighth and four runs in the ninth to claim the victory and the weekend sweep. SDSU closer Royce Ring dropped to 5-1 on the year after allowing two runs in the ninth. Cougar reliever Justin Su'a upped his record to 3-0 after holding the Aztecs scoreless on only one hit in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
SDSU left fielder Ben Leuthard and third baseman Pilar Amaya led the offensive charge for the Aztecs, with Leuthard going 3-for-5 with three runs batted in and three runs scored and Amaya turning in a 2-for-4 effort in which he drove in three.
SDSU fell two games behind BYU in the Mountain West Conference standings with six conference games remaining.
