FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The 46th-ranked and second-seeded San Diego State women's tennis team ran its winning streak to 10 matches on Friday afternoon, with a 4-0 shutout of sixth-seeded Colorado State in the semifinal round of the Mountain West Conference championship. The Aztecs will face top-seeded Brigham Young in Saturday's conference championship match, with the winner receiving an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.
The Aztecs did not drop a set in recording their second consecutive 4-0 victory. On Thursday, San Diego State disposed of Air Force 4-0 in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.
The Aztecs cruised to the doubles point by winning all three doubles matches. San Diego State's top doubles team of Silvia Tornier and Lindsey Hedberg, ranked 43rd nationally, cruised to an 8-4 victory over Amanda Bartz and Allison Lisle.
In singles, the Aztecs won all four completed singles matches in straight sets. At number one singles, Hedberg recorded her 20th victory of the season, with a 6-1, 6-1 victory, while Tornier claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win at number two singles.
San Diego State sealed the match with wins at number four and six victories with Katja Karrento and Julie Childley clinching the victory for the Aztecs.
Although the Aztecs won five points, the team scoring is officially stopped on the fourth point.
San Diego State, 17-7 on the season, looks to avenge its only conference loss of the season in the conference championship match against 31st-ranked Brigham Young. The Cougars claimed a 4-3 win over the Aztecs on March 30. San Diego State and Brigham Young will meet for the league title tomorrow at noon PDT.
